the alleyways of Zhujiajiao water town

Just under an hour from #Shanghai #China is the ancient water town of #Zhujiajiao.

Known for its picturesque waterways, famous bridges and quaint alleyways, this is a place where you can easily spend a day exploring the historic buildings and gardens with many dating as far back as the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Along the way you can sample some of the local snacks or stop by one of the many cafes and restaurants that litter the narrow streets.

Zhujiajiao water town is a fun day out and a nice retreat from the bustling Shanghai metropolis.

Some of the snacks you can find here:

STINKY TOFU - this fermented tofu snack may not look or smell appealing but never judge a book by its cover! It is actually not that bad tasting. You can find this street snack throughout China. The most popular way to eat this is deep fried with some side dipping sauces. I had mine with chilli sauce.

various DRIED FRUIT

STICKY RICE with fillings wrapped and steamed in bamboo leaves

jars of FERMENTED and PICKLED food

chinese BEEF JERKY

INSECTS, SPIDERS and STARFISH skewers anyone ?

fresh SUGARCANE
